Before the people from Europe came: Maori were divided into tribes. The tribes lived very separated. Each tribe was divided into clans, which had the same ancestor. The clans were divided up in large family groups. Each family group each had a leader who was called for rangatiraene. These leaders could not prevail over the other groups, but when decisions were taken the leaders of the various groups came together. The Maori people were moving from one place to another after how long recourses were holding on the place they lived. When recourses were getting smaller they moved to another place. The Maori people were in lots of wars with the other tribes. The reason could be that one tribe was stealing something from another tribe, or killed someone. They had a rule that said that people from one tribe couldn’t kill other people from the same tribe, because there were too little people. So they couldn’t kill people from their own tribe because then they could lose too many people. The Maori people’s warriors were not so bloody, and didn’t get killed so often because the weapons were not so good. The Maori people get a lot of weapons when the Europeans came, so than many other tribes was extinct, because they didn’t have weapons. Family was really important to Maori people. Many babies were born, because many babies was dead when they gat born. When a boy got born they had some magical rituals. They said that a boy got a good warrior if they have had medical rituals. And if it was a girl they had rituals for her so she would be a good wife, that could stitch and that sort of things. The body was dressed in beautiful clothes when one of the Maori people died. The body was buried in a sitting position when the family was sitting whit the grave and crying over the lost family member. The Maori people didn’t get so old, sins it was so many warriors. Average 40 years old, but the strong and good warriors got older.
